Inside the Love Story of Hasnat Khan and Princess Diana

In 1995, two months before her famous Panorama interview, Princess Diana met Dr. Hasnat Khan, a charming heart surgeon at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital. Their connection began when Diana visited one of Khan’s patients and quickly blossomed into a deep, secret romance that gave her reason to smile again after years of turmoil.

Despite their differences—Diana, the world’s most photographed woman, and Khan, a private Muslim doctor who loved jazz clubs and KFC—their bond grew strong. Diana went to great lengths to keep their love hidden, sneaking into jazz clubs in disguise and inviting Khan to Kensington Palace in secret. She even read about Islam and met his family in Pakistan, showing how serious she was about their relationship.

Their love deepened when Diana introduced Khan to Princes William and Harry, calling him her “Mr. Wonderful.” Yet, the pressure of the media and the contrast between their worlds became too heavy. Khan feared the spotlight could destroy his career, while Diana longed for openness. Their relationship ended in July 1997—just weeks before Diana’s tragic death in Paris.

Today, Dr. Hasnat Khan continues his work as a heart surgeon, living quietly in the UK. Though their romance was short-lived, it remains one of the most touching chapters in Diana’s life—a story of love, secrecy, and two souls who met beyond the boundaries of royalty and fame.
